Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Luhaga Mpina has tasked the National Ranch Corporation (NARCO) Board of Trustees to review investment contracts and drop all, which do not meet investment criteria.
The minister also said he would not hesitate to drop the names of members of the board, who would fail to support investment. Mr Mpina was speaking during the launch of the board yesterday.
He said for some time, NARCO had been recording poor performance and that the corporation must utilise its resources to generate profit as required.
“This board has been formed at the time when NARCO is going through various challenges, I believe the board will fulfil its duties,” he said.
He added: “I understand that it is difficult to dismantle the whole board and it is against the regulations, but I will not hesitate to take action against an individual member, who will fail to contribute greatly to the NARCO.”
According to the minister, Tanzania has a big number of livestock, but still the sector does not contribute enough to the national economy. He said 70 percent of livestock was illegally sold to the international market and that 30 percent remained and contributed only 1bn/- annually.
Mr Mpina has directed the board to review all NARCO contracts and give recommendations on what should be done to enable the government to benefit from the sector.
The minister has also instructed the board to clean up the corrupt, theft and embezzlement networks within the sector for big results in the future.
“The former minister of this ministry dismantled this board because it was accused of several issues, including corruption, I would like to ask you to clean up everything and make a good name,” he noted.
The minister also instructed all organisations under his ministry to prepare government dividend by November 30, this year.
