Malawi 2018/19 maize output jumps 27 pct

Malawi’s maize output rose 27 percent to 3.3 million tonnes in the 2018/19 season, helped by abundant rainfall and government subsidies, its agriculture minister said on Thursday.

“Our expectation is that we’ll continue to have good rains between now and May, which should further improve prospects for food production,” Joseph Mwanamvekha said.

Maize is a staple crop in the southern African nation of 19 million people.

Government subsidies to farms helped lift production, Mwanamvekha said.

This year’s output is expected to increase by anywhere between 32 percent and 90 percent, according to initial government crop estimates.
