Ethio Telecom introduces digital livestock tracking to modernize Ethiopia’s agriculture

Ethiopia, home to Africa’s largest livestock population, faces challenges in tracking, financing, and insuring its agricultural assets. Ethio Telecom’s newly launched Digital Livestock Tracking Solution harnesses IoT, GPS, and RFID technology to improve cattle monitoring, reduce theft, and facilitate financial inclusion for farmers.

“By integrating real-time tracking with financial services, we are giving Ethiopian farmers access to loans, insurance, and digital records – unlocking economic opportunities for rural communities,” said Frehowot Tamiru, CEO of Ethio Telecom.

The solution provides real-time health and location monitoring, integrates with Telebirr mobile money, and offers financial institutions verifiable digital records for credit assessments. The initiative is expected to increase livestock productivity, reduce losses, and improve rural livelihoods.
